TO RECEIVE THE ASSOCIATION REPORT 2007/08 AND AUDITED STATEMENT OF ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DEC 2007. 3. The Executive Committee propose that to save cost, the annual report, statement of account, notice of motion if any and nomination for Executive Committee members if any will not be circulated by post to members prior to the AGM. However, a copy of the annual report, annual statement of accounts, notice of motion if any and nomination for Executive Committee members if any will be made available to members seven days before the AGM at the National Office or upon request. 6. ASSOCIATION REPORT 2007-08 MYHA The Malaysian Youth Hostels Association (MYHA) was founded in 1955 and registered on 15 March 1957 under the Societies Act. MYHA is affiliated to the Malaysian Youth Council (Majlis Belia Malaysia) and is a full member of the International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF) based in England, UK The 36th AGM of the Association was held on Saturday,16 June 2007 at the Wira Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The National Office moved to its own office in March 2007 located at No 1-7, Block B, Impian Kota Apartment, Jalan Manau off Jalan Kampung Attap, 50460 Kuala Lumpur. The telephone and fax numbers remain the same. EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE The Executive Committee for the year 2006 - 08 elected at the 35th AGM held on 16 June 2006 is as follows: President : Wan Darulani bin Wan Abdul Ghani Vice Presidents : Rajaretnam A/L Armuggan Kamarunzaman bin Abdul Rahman National Treasurer : Khairul Annuar bin Mansor (appointed on 19 June 2006) Committee Members : Mohamad Arif bin Abdul Rashid Mohamad Hafizi bin Zamhari Jacinta Loh Abdul Khalid bin Abdul Rashid (appointed 19 June 2006) Krishnan A/L Kuppusamy (appointed 19 June 2006) Bessie Cheah(appointed 19 June 2006) Six Exco meetings were held since the last AGM to date. TRUSTEES With the passing of the late President, Dato Hisham Albakri and the remaining two trustees(Datuk Tan Cheng Swee and HMS Hussein)agreed to resign citing ill health, members present at the 35th AGM agreed to appoint Ramchand and Seow Ewe Hoe to be the trustees for the Association. AUDITORSThe auditors of the Association are A Razak & Co appointed at the last AGM. MATTERS There are no outstanding legal matters. TAX EXEMPT STATUS MYHA continues to receive a tax-exempt status under section 44(6) Income Tax Act.(ref:01/35/42/51/179-6.713; government gazette LN215/60 dated 25 Aug 1960).In 2007, a donation of RM 92,569.67 was received to support community work for orphanage program (Pusat Jagaan Nur Hikmah) and RM 21,000 for KABESA Program. STAFF EMPLOYMENT Full time Staff i. Hamirudin Hashim Executive Secretary since Sept 1986ii. Lionel Louis Hostel Assistant KL Hostel since May 2001 Effective 1 June 2003, the operation of the Port Dickson and Melaka Hostel has been outsourced to the respective hostel supervisors. The hostel supervisors will receive 45 % of the hostel receipts and 25% of membership sales. MYHA will continue to pay for the hostel operation cost. HOSTEL NETWORK Kuala Lumpur International Hostel At the request of the IYHF Asia Pacific Coordinator, the KL Hostel officially ceased operation effective 1 July 2006. The building is in the process to be sold to an interested buyer. Port Dickson Hostel This is the first hostel owned and managed by the Association since 1960. The hostel facilities were improved in 1991 at a cost of RM 87,000 and the Ministry of Youth and Sports gave a building grant of RM 30,000. In 1991, the Federal Government approved a loan of RM 350,000 to further upgrade the hostel with the building of 3 units of chalet, one unit of administration block with office, reception, rooms, kitchen and dining area and one unit of toilet/ bath facilities. The hostel also provides a seminar/multipurpose room for 50 persons. The hostel provides 12 beds on the old block and 48 beds in the chalet and suitable for families. The overnight fee per person is RM 8 in the old block and RM 10 in the chalet. Since Jan 2006, the PD hostel is no longer actively promoted as a hostel as the facilities are quite run down and create a negative impact on members and guests. MYHA appointed Jurukur Kurnia, a licensed surveyor to apply for land conversion from the present agriculture status to commercial. The PD District and Land Office has written to inform that the land has been approved as commercial land but with condition it is to be used as hostel building. The process for land conversion is still ongoing and will take some time to be approved. Dr Harish Saxena, IYHF President went for a site visit on 12 March 2006 and he was very supportive to the idea of the joint venture development. He felt that MYHA should continue to manage a hostel which he feels is important for the future of MYHA and to provide income to the Association. A number of joint venture possibilities were discussed but unfortunately did not materialize. Melaka Hostel The Association bought 2 units of three storey shophouse building in Taman Melaka Raya in 1993 and the purchase was made possible with the sale of the property in Pantai Kundor, Melaka. The IYHF provided a soft loan of USD 80,000 for the renovation and purchase of hostel furniture and equipment. Two floors are rented out to the Malacca Club for RM 1,400 a month and one floor to Jessie Snack House for RM 1,100 a month. The hostel is located very near places of historical interests and business activities. The hostel has 8 rooms with 56 beds and provides a common room with TV, dining area and pantry. The overnight fee per person is RM 15 in an air-conditioned room and RM 10 in a room with fan. The overnights in 2007 are as follows: Local 1042 1213 in 06 1130 in 05 Foreign 342 524 in 06 432 in 05 Total 1384 1737 in 06 1562 in 05 From Jan-May 2008, the overnights are as follows: Local 207 Foreign 350 Total 557 Associated Hostels MYHA welcome private hostels to be associated and be part of the youth hostel network. The private hostels must meet the requirement of the local authorities and hostel assured standards and common practices set by the IYHF to be listed in the international guidebook. Plantation Resorts Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Felda group which manage 5 resorts, Wira Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Hotel Singahsana Petaling Jaya and Naza Hotel Penang are part of the network and giving special rates to members. MEMBERSHIP Membership is open to all Malaysians regardless of race, religion or colour over the age of 12 who agree to abide by the rules of the Association. There are two types of membership: i. National – valid in Malaysia onlyii. ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS ‘PROGRAM KEPIMPINAN 3K (kepimpinan, kemahiran dan keusahawanan)’ MYHA with the financial support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports organized a youth leadership program (three days two nights)) in May and July 2007. A total of 98 students took part. Another program was also organized from 7-9 September 2007 at Tasik Chini Resort and 147 students attended the program. This year the program was held at Tasik Chini Resort from 14-16 March 2008 and 145 students took part. The Ministry of Youth and Sports allocated RM 20,000 for each program held. ASIA PACIFIC YOUTH RALLY Last year, the Korea YHA hosted the youth rally in Seoul from 27-31 July 2007 and 4 members attended the program. This year, the Chinese Taipei YHA will host the youth rally from 14-19 Aug 2008 and 4 members below the age of 30 years old will attend this program. Local hospitality will be provided to participants from Asia Pacific countries by the host country. INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM ON ‘HOSTELING FOR PEACE AND INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING’ MYHA with the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports organized the above program from 6-12 August 2007 in conjunction with the 50 years MYHA anniversary, 50 years MERDEKA celebration and also Visit Malaysia Year 2007. The program was held at the 12th College, University Malaya Kuala Lumpur and was attended by a total of 80 young people from the Asia Pacific countries (28 participants) and local youth and university students. The opening ceremony was officiated by Tuan Haji Shaari Salleh, Deputy Director General of Youth representing the Minister of Youth and Sports. This program on peace and international understanding was based on the Memorandum of Understanding between the International Youth Hostel Federation and UNESCO in 2003 to promote world peace and goodwill among people all over the world. Promvit from IYHF gave the presentation on the program. The Ministry of Youth and Sports approved RM 30,000 for this program while the State Government of Negri Sembilan donated RM 5,000. ‘KONVOI 50 TAHUN MERDEKA’ MYHA took part in the program organized by the Malaysian Youth Council which was held from 18-23 Aug 2007. The flag off was officiated by the then Menteri Besar of Selangor and closing ceremony by Senator Dr Chong at Central Market. IYHF ASIA REGIONAL MEETING AND MARKETING SEMINAR Korea YHA hosted the meeting from 29 November to 02 December 2007 at the Olympic Parktel Youth Hostel and the meeting was attended by the National Secretary and Treasurer. HONG KONG YHA 35th ANNIVERSARY-NGONG PING CHARITY WALK MYHA participated in the above program held from 19-22 Jan 2008 and 11 members took part including some members of the Exco. The group then visited Guong Zhou and Shenzen Youth Hostel and was given a welcoming dinner by Ms Yin Cheng from China YHA 47th IYHF INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE This conference held once every two years was held in Cairo, Egypt from 20-24 May 2008. Exco Member, Bessie Cheah attended the conference. PROPOSED PROGRAM JATIDIRI KESUKARELAAN NASIONAL (PJKN) MYHA has been selected by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to run this program this year and this 10 day program is targeted to youths between 18-25 years old. 19th INTERNATIONAL YOUTH FORUM 2008 The National Council of Youth Organizations in Korea (NCYOK) with Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) is organizing the above program from 15-22 July in Seoul, Korea. The Forum will focus on the topic” Role of Asian and European Youth in tackling global issues through intercultural dialogue”. Interested participants should be between 18 and 30 years old, write in the application form and write an essay on the above topic. MYHA sent one participant to the 18th International Youth Forum held last year from 19-26 July 2007. FINANCE AND ANNUAL ACCOUNTS Income for the Association is derived mainly from sales of membership. There is now a need to create more programs to generate income and membership promotion. The Ministry of Youth and Sports provided an administration grant of RM 20,000 for 2007 and RM 30,000 for 2008. There was also rental income received from the hostel building in Melaka (rental of two floors to Malacca Club and one floor to Jessie Snack House). The annual accounts for the year ended 31 Dec 2007 have been audited and will be presented at the AGM. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The Association would like to thank all government agencies especially the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia and the IYHF for its financial support and cooperation in the development and promotion of the youth hostel movement in Malaysia.
