Name: Owen Koh Tze Chien M'ship No M'ship Type Sydney Central YHA, Australia The experience in YHA central is really nice...they have 2 huge kitchens, and about 7 big fridge ( Mon - Sunday ) for guests to store their stuff. Most of us cook at the kitchen bcoz is really cheap compare to eat outside.
The cost of airport is about AUD 12 ++ ( depends whether u take train / airport shuttle ). But, if you book the shuttle from YHA hostel, it only cost about AUD 12 bucks. Best of all, the location is awesome...and the train is very convenient....2-3 stops to Sydney Central Business District area, sydney opera house and Sydney Harbour.
There are many discounts for YHA members - eg. 20% discount to Museums and Toronga Zoo. There are 60 over discounts shops and activities. YHA Australia has a booklet for that They even have a YHA travel company next to the YHA reception....basically, you can book really cheap trip to do sight seeing in every part of Australia. There are internet in YHA Central and Railway and also internet cafe next to YHA Central which is awesome.
On top of that, YHA Central has a cafe that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's cheap and reasonable. Transportation and moving around in Sydney Central is very easy and convenient. Many convenient stores around and I can walk around to Chinatown for a Malaysian " mamak" store...Can you believe it...roti prata and teh tarik!
They have nice TV lounge, Cinema Screening room, Laundry place and swimming pool. Many activities through out the week for YHA guest :) Yesterday was BBQ Kangaroo meat and free beer for just AUD 5 bucks! YHA Central also have a cool bar below the premises. It's called the Skooba - sometimes YHA gives free beer coupon...which is totally awesome.
I will recommend travellers to YHA central. YHA railway is not bad either...very convenient....
Once again, thanks for your help.
Cheers,

I only remember these 2 options:- (a) Public bus (about NZD 4) travel from the airport and will stop at every bus station through the city. But bus size is small and no luggage storage make it quite inconvenient for travelers with big luggage... (b) Super shuttle (about NZD 26 per person). Is a door to door drop off shuttle from/to airport. Luggage storage compartment available. Though is quite expensive but much more convenient especially when the YHA is quite far away from bus stops & YOU can get a cheaper price if more people are traveling together at the same shuttle. Toll free no.: 0800 748885 2) What are the mode of travel available form the Airport to YHA?
Most convenient will be bus or shuttle.. 3) Is public transportation easely available?
Easily available esp. bus as NZ is a small country to travel. 4) How is the stay in the hostel?
Comparing to local-owned backpackers hostel, YHA are much more cleaner & comfortable but expensive. Some suburb might not have a YHA thus backpackers will be the best option. 5) Is there self catering kitchen available in the hostel? Every hostels here have self catering kitchen & sometimes you will get free foods (like spices, cereal, grains, drinks etc) left by other travelers. Only need to notice that some backpackers hostels did not allow cooking after 10pm. 6) Local tour and travel deal are available from the hostel?
Tour & travel deals are available in almost all hostels reception desk. If there is not,you can easily get info & book tours and accommodations in the information sites (i-site) in NZ which is very accessible. No harm to try to check on the internet for some cheaper deals sometimes... Online payment is very safe but make sure you do some research of the company in case of some scams... 7) What are the other discounts and benefits available for the YHA membership card?
Basically you sometimes might get discounts esp.in tour packages and entrance fees for YHA members. Simply ask the counter if any discount available for backpackers...They are very helpful. 8) How useful is the YHA membership card for you when you were travelling?
Very useful esp. for better bed rates or travel discounts. **Another tip is YHA might run a "BUY IN BULK" promotions for travelers. The deal is you just need to buy a 10 days or 15 days bulk beds and you can enjoy better bed rates when you travel around by staying in YHA.. My husband and I are now in New Zealand . Here is information on our trafel to Southern China. Date of travel - 17 May to 20 June 2009 Travelling route - Guilin sail along Li River, stop at Yongshou, bus to Guilin and then overnight train to Guiyang, bus to Kaili, bus to Guiyang, train to Kunming, bus to Dali, bus to Lijiang, bus toShangrila, bus to Dejin(60KM from Tibetan border) to see the Meili Snow Mountains, bus. back to Dali, flew to Guangzhou and by ferry to Hong Kong. Hostels/ Hotels Guilin BackStreet Youth Hostel We flew to Guilin on 17 May and met up with our friends, a Kiwi couple there. Our accomodation was pre-booked on line staying at the Guilin BackStreet Youth Hostel (next to Sheraton Hotel). It was located right in the city centre amidst a shopping cum food centre. We had details on how to go from the net. From the airport we took a shuttle at 12 Yuan per person to the town centre. At the centre we took a taxi ( taxis are readily available) which cost us about 14 Yuan to the hostel. Staff at the hostel spoke reasonably good English although we spoke good Mandarin. They were helpful and we bought a directory of all the youth hostels in China together with pictures and facilities which was more detail than our international directory. From that we booked alot of our other hostels. Some of the places we visited di not have the YH and we had help from our taxi drivers and friends we made. The rooms were a little musty but overall good. It has western toilets, very important. This hostel was colse to everything and we could walk to all the attractions and tourists spots. Cost was 80 Yuan a night, a double room with bathroomand toilet attached Free internet services. Bamboo Inn at Yangshou. There were many small hostels in this place but we choose this one as the place was right in the old city. Here the girls were very helpful. Food was good They assisted us in booking our next accomodation at Guiyang. Cost was also at 80Yuan for a double room with bath/toliet attached From here we could walk to the bustop and taxi stand easily Cost of bus travel is cheap for one person but in a group it is advisable to take a taxi. It is good to check with the hostel staff on prices of things like travel or food. Free internet services too. Guiyang was a terrible place. Please advice travellers not to go there. The youth hostel we stayed in was terrible. Kaili has no youth hostal so stayed at the Crowne Plaza at 288Yuan a night. Food was excellent and the morning craft market up the road was good but bargaining is a must. Buy the ethinc stuff here. Kunming is a big city .We stayed the Camelia Youth Hostel at 110Yuan a night breakfast included. Not recommended as this part of the complex is the old wing. There is no air-con and it can be very hot in summer. The place is also noisy and far from the city centre. Taxi to the bus/train station was 30Yuan one way. Within the city you can travel by bus for only 1Yuan per person. Very cheap but vyou have to speak Mandarin and know the route you wish to take. Dali was the best of all the places we stayed. We were at the Four Seasons Youth Hostel in the old city. The place had been renovated and we stayed in a double room for 80Yuan a night. The shower was good and they washed clothes for 8Yuan a bag. So far we had discounts since we were IHY members. Usually we get 10 to 20Yuan discounts. Lijiang was the worst as the youth hostel was old and the showers were outside. Shangrila Here we stayed at the Youth Hostel called Downtown. The couple who ran it was very friendly and allowed us to wash clothes for free. We could also use the kitchen. It wax the only one the has the facilities. We stayed at a hotel in Decin also called Dequin. From Guangzhou to Hong Kong we were with relations Overall the people we met in China were3 helpful. It is best to speak Mandarin especially in smaller cities. The hostels were genrally okay except in Lijiang. Prices range from 80Yuan to 120 for a double room and 30 to 40 for a dorm bed. You need to haggle for taxi fares. It is good to check with the locals or hostel staff about prices. The best way to move from one city to another is by bus, especially the air-con ones Train tickets are a hassle to buy and they work out more expensive and also take longer time. If you are sure on where you want to go flying is good if you can egt help to buy the tickets early. Hope the info will be useful. Cheers Ms. Hon, Alice.
